Another of H.R. of the Bad Brains at CBGB's circa 1982 doing his FLIP! ... I think i made this photo the night i started selling copies of my 'zine MY RULES in NYC visiting from LA. (I'm figuring this out because this photo didn't make it in the 'zine, and it was probably shot the xmas after the ones that did make it in. i probably brought a bunch of them, out east visiting family for the xmas holiday, the Bad Brains played two or three nights in a row at xmas time in 1981 and 1982 maybe another year as well, probably some of the best Bad Brains shows ever, that live at CBGB dvd that's out was shot during this weekend, it's pretty fucking incredible! I can see my flash going off capturing/creating some of my classic Bad Brains shots and just standing toward the back of the stage watching in others. Some great great shows, im thinking a peak period as far as i was concerned. This photo of course is in the new MY RULES bigger than ever. S.S. Decontrol - in my eyes the most notorious of all the hardcore punk bands from Boston. Hence this full page dedicated to them in my original MY RULES photozine, i also asked Al to write a piece for the 'zines "Ingenious Editorials" ... These photos were made at CBGB's and the Paramount theater in Staten Island where there was a big riot after the gig, if memory serves me well. These are the only recordings the band made with possibly their strongest lineup: Henry Rollins on vocals, Greg Ginn and Dez Cadena on guitar, Chuck Dukowski on bass, and Chuck Biscuits on drums.

CHUCK DUKOWSKI of BLACK FLAG at practice somewhere in the SouthBay section of Los Angeles, early 1982. I was lucky enough to have sat in on practice with Black Flag many times, even made photos a few times. Now ordinarily one would think at practice what are you gonna shoot some corny portraits? or half ass playing tuning? and writing? FUCK NO ... BLACK FLAG WERE BRINGING IT! Like their lives depended on it! 6-8 hour days of practice, often, their practice could be more intense than a gig!! so eventually i decided to bring my camera a few times. This practice was especially intense, i shot an amazing roll of film here or maybe even two, made some incredible photographs including the iconic image of Henry that was used on the cover of SPRAY PAINT THE WALLS (The Story of Black Flag) as well as classics of Greg and another of Chuck with that crazy mustache, when the head of his base smashed the flash off the top of my camera. They were my favorite band of the era and Dukowski was the heart and soul of that band to me. A real badass. Intelligent. A few weeks ago when i was out in L.A. for the Skateboarding Hall of Fame event, i took an afternoon to visit Chuck and his wife Lora down in Venice, i ended up hanging out for like 7 hours!
